How it all started

Paul Michael  believes art chose him. He is from New Orleans, a city where rich African American artistry lives and breathes. At his preschool, Paul remembered seeing the process of a local artist group completing a mural on his playground and thinking, “that’s exactly what I want to do.” After that, art became his compass. Years later, he joined that same organization, called Young Aspirations Young Artists(YA/YA), where he began to design 2D and 3D work. He's been working with YA/YA for the last 12 years designing and producing murals and furniture and working closely with my community. Concurrently to his membership in the organization, he studied at an art-based high school called New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA) for 3 years. Since then, Paul has been an artist-in-residence at Cow House Studios in Wexford, Ireland and the Joan Mitchell Foundation in New Orleans. Art has given him purpose and a voice and has made him an outstanding member of his community.

He has served as a mentor and studio assistant at YA/YA, which included the responsibility of planning, designing, and executing major projects. He always saw the connection as a creative partnership because it gave him a chance to give back to a community that raised him as a kid. While working in this capacity, he had the opportunity to design a set for “Peter and the Wolf.” This project was commissioned by Works and Process (New York), and showcased in the Guggenheim Theater in 2009.  This experience prompted the question of where he wanted to take his work.

After being In New York, Paul decided to apply to Parsons School of Design in pursuit of creative exploration. Living in New York for the last 5  years has allowed him to see himself and his work in relation to society. Wright graduated from Parsons The New School for Design BFA in Illustration/Fine Art. In New York, and currently enrolled as a graduate student at SVA (School of Visual Arts).
